Opinion poll survey of the February, 2017 for the Somalia presidential elections

The 2016/2017 Somalia elections cum selection is the first of its kind since 1967.


This limited suffrage largely relied on clan elders’ and regional states nomination of representatives and did not involve direct popular voting given the security situation in the country amid other factors.

The election however set a fresh precedent in the Somali politics since women, for the first time, got a significant representation in parliament, under the provisional constitution.

The new political dispensation provided a bi-cameral legislature composed of the Upper House (Senate) and the Lower House (The house of the People).
A two-level election managing bodies was responsible for coordination ofelectoral process, The Federal Indirect Elections Implementation Team (FEIT) and State-Level Electoral Indirect Implementation Teams (SEITs).
Members of the lower house were elected by 14,025 electors (clan     representatives), who cast their votes in a parliamentary election while the country’s federal states presidents nominated and its legislators approved members of the upper house (senate).
