(Medeshi)- Somaliland- Berbera cement factory has been leased to 3 local companies. It has a capacity of 200,000 tons a year.
Raw Material availability is in abundance for the plant to work for coming 30 years. This includes Limestone, Gypsum and Clay. The factory has not been operational for the last 26yrs and is partially in ruins after looting during the civil war in the early 1990s.
The conveyor belts in the factory have been dismantled by looters , cut into pieces and then mostly used as mudguards for trucks.
The government of Somaliland had placed guards outside the factory shortly after the withdrawal from the union with Somalia.
.
The rehabilitation of the factory will create jobs for the locals and revenue for the government. It will also satisfy the demand of local cement consumption while creating the opportunity to export the excess production to the neighbouring countries.
