(Tradewinds) - An MSC containership has been detained in Somalia after allegedly taking most of the country offline by accidentally severing an internet cable.
The 1,730-teu MSC Alice (built 2003) has been accused of dragging its anchor through a fibre optic line outside Mogadishu on 24 June.
MSC said in a statement cited by African media: "Following reports that an underwater cable was damaged, MSC is investigating the incident with other relevant parties and these investigations are at an early stage."
It has been contacted for further comment by TradeWinds.
The Somali government hopes to fix the problem this week.
Somalia’s attorney general confirmed to the BBC that the vessel is being held in Somali waters and that the country was also demanding compensation.
“Whoever was involved in this incident will be tried and the company that belongs to the ship that was involved in cutting the undersea cable is required to pay for the loss,” Ahmed Ali Dahir was quoted as saying.
