Ethiopia: Ethio-Djibouti Railway to Start Operation By November



The cross border railway stretching from Ethiopia to Djibouti, Ethio-Djibouti Railway Line, is set to start operation by November 8, 2017.
According to Acting General Manager of Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC), Berhanu Besha (Dr.), problems that arouse, which are the reason for the delay in the service, will be addressed until late this month.


Problems related with electric power supply to the line were resolved as Ethiopia agreed to supply power and the cost to be covered as per the power purchase agreement signed between the 2 countries, Berhanu explained.
Construction of railway tracks linking the main railway line with the port and fuel oil storage depots were nearing completion, the Acting General Manger explained.
Commenting on the number of stations, Berhanu explained the initial plan was to build 30 stations, which later was reduced to 16 according to study conducted by financiers and taking into consider the economic activities in the areas.

Currently the railway line is running a final test of 120 kilometers per hour, despite the fact the company that will manage the operation is not yet established.
