(UK in Somalia ) - The UK pledges additional £21 million aid support, responding early to the risk of drought in 2018.






During her visit to Mogadishu on Sunday, the UK’s International Development Secretary, Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, heard about the extreme and challenging climate conditions Somalia is likely to face this year. Ms Mordaunt announced an additional £21million in response from the UK, and called on the international community to step up and maintain support to Somalia to prevent famine. In 2017, the UK provided £170m of humanitarian funding in response to the drought.

Ms Mordaunt said:

‘... the international community also needs to step up their support to Somalia before more innocent lives are lost.’

Ms Mordaunt also met with Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre, Finance Minister Abdirahman Duale Beyle and civil society representatives during her visit.
