Eight killed in Somalia convoy ambush

At least eight people have been killed when Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a convoy near the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Two of those killed in the attack in the Balad region, about 30 kilometres north of Mogadishu, were regional lawmakers, police officer Abdikarin Ali said. The others were soldiers.

The Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack, telling radio station Andalus it killed 12 people.

Meanwhile, in the western Gedo region, security forces attacked and killed 10 Al-Shabaab militants, military official Abdullahi Mohamed said.

Al-Shabaab, which is seeking to establish an Islamist state in Somalia, regularly launches attacks on government buildings, hotels and restaurants in the volatile nation in the Horn of Africa.
