(Medeshi) - Commentary- Somaliland should not let the Chinese to fish illegally in its coasts.
The Somali government based in Mogadishu has recently issued a license to 33 Chinese firms to fish Tuna in all the offshore areas of Somalia including Somaliland.
Somaliland and Somalia have the longest coastline in Africa with over 3300 km from south to the North.
The current federal government of Somalia which has no jurisdiction over the republic of Somaliland has recently signed a multimillion-dollar contract awarding the Chinese firms to fish freely in this long coastline without consenting the government of Somaliland.
This is a clear violation of the sovereignty of the republic of Somaliland because Somaliland seceded from Somalia on May 18 1991 after the failed union of July 1,1960.
Somaliland has a strong coast guard and the efforts of the Chinese fishing firms will be futile. But the Somaliland government should send a strong message to both the Chinese and Somalia to respect the sovereignty and the territorial boundaries of the republic of Somaliland .
Background:
" Somaliland united with Somalia in July 1st 1960 just 5 days after it got its independence from Britain on June 26, 1960. The union with Somalia has not been successful for the people of Somaliland . Corruption, anarchy and the socialism regime of dictator Siyad Bare prompted the struggle of Somalilanders in 1982 when the Somali National Movement (SNM) was formed in London to free the people of Somaliland from the socialist dictatorship of Somalia .

Somaliland finally broke away from Somalia on May 18 , 1991 after a bloody civil war against the dictatorship of the socialist regime of Siyad Barre.
Somaliland hopes to gain international recognition very soon after the country has carried out three free and fair presidential elections , one parliamentary election and two municipal elections.
The country has its own flag , its own currency, banks , passport , police , coast guard and military force."
