(The Indian Ocean Newsletter) - President Uhuru Kenyatta is taking seriously the allegation by his deputy president William Ruto that four ministers are plotting to have him assassinated.
To prevent his government from collapsing, on 22 June he summoned the interior secretary Fred Matiangi, the inspector general of police Hillary Mutyambai, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti, and the director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) Philip Kameru to decide on what action to take.
Kenyatta refused to sack the four ministers cited and also refused to accept the resignations of the information and communications secretary, Joe Mucheru, and his counterpart at health, Sicily Kariuki. He has also been trying in vain to arrange a meeting between Ruto and the four ministers. The president postponed the cabinet meeting scheduled for 27 June as the ministers do not wish to sit down at the same table as the deputy president.
